============================================= change summary in: changes.txt ============================================= 1)Saw HD error on Arches only onece. So not calling it in yet. 2)ACL8.1 Needs Solaris9 or above. Tried 10. OpenSolaris(~=10/l1)is even easier to use. 3)Arches is online, waiting for Ben's update. Not fixed-ip yet; but still more useable. 4)Several explanations of getting new vs fixing old. Only parts that make sense are very cheap one(s) now. 5)If a real change is needed, new/different machine. Linux&/orOS-Xbox should be mixed in, as needed. 6)What is really needed when? I'm guessing now: Not much at the moment, but when we do we should get a machine that has room to grow easily. 7)A lnx|osx server that could go to 8-16Meg RAM In sys.htm that would be a few $k. =============================================* Not really waiting for Chris, as he will show us a machine for $6k+ that we don't want to get; Which is still better than the cost of updating the EOL machines; More money&less machine. Only thing is Ben gets eBay parts to get by for now; and then we get a modern stock machine that can easily grow w/our needs. ============================================= It looks like 1/2the machine @2X the price, to update discontinued/old parts:[NotWorthIt] ============================================= some numbers below, another quote coming soon ============================================= os8 only had java1.1&was generally unusable os9 is needed for acl8.1 anyway os10&opensolaris are more usable(like linux) [os-x is what I use at home&would prefer] ============================================= I'm guessing Ben doesn't know how to admin as otherwise I'd get help&more would of been done to the machines. I suggest getting easier to maintain systems; I've only been around solaris w/decent admins. ============================================= I would put in a help request on arches drive but it isn't failing all the time&I'm more interested in getting it on the network. [Too bad we can't get a student admin/or just a easy to use device.] ============================================= When I gave my friend my old sun/IPX to fix, we talked about the new OpenSolaris, esp the one that is trying to be more Linux compatible. He said he liked that too; but would put BSD on it. [Note, I got it in mid90s, had a hardware failure&moved to easier to use machines;I'm not a sysadmin.] =I hope no one expects me to be a sys-admin; I've always worked in places that hire them; I've not. I've also not even dealt w/the hardware reps; I don't know our situation or what I can ask for. And no one seams to be available to tell me. [The cheapest mac or linux box;
