 |  |  | This will help describe the work surrounding my project: http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/522-proj-breakdown.html It will incorporate my work in cs511 (AI-2) and interest/work in Modeling. [UPDATE-Mar29 put likert-like question to ask on (bottom right link): http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/522-proj-breakdown.html Now (30th) includes a 522-form.html (31st java(script) idea might capture data well.] [April7, testing cs511 hw4 from bottom of that page; If I can get it going here, I can score a run in real-time.] [Apr15: Very close on one attempt at collecting data via the web: http://66.243.130.237/~bobak/ ] [Game is playable, from links below or at: http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/wapp.html ] <-This link is ready for play, Click middle link below> [A draft of the paper is at: http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/bobak-cpf.htm .doc ] | [For *****Tuesday Feb23rd,***** JAVA DEMO: http://www2.parc.com/istl/projects/MagicLenses/SimpleDemo.html http://www.go2net.com/internet/deep/1997/04/23/body.html http://www.go2net.com/internet/deep/1997/04/30/body.html http://libertad.univalle.edu.co/~lgarreta/ also: handout at: http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/share/FileSharing3.html ]
Class Subject: Human Computer InteractionThe purpose of the course project for CS 522 is for students to develop experience in the design, enactment, analysis, and reporting of an empirical study involving humans and computers (or related technologies). The range of potential projects is limitless; the only constraint is that the project involve the collection of data from actual users. Those data may be obtained by many different means: surveys, instrumentation of existing software systems, construction of applications with embedded instrumentation, audio and/or video recordings, etc. We should align your own projects-including thesis work, work in other courses, or personal interests-with the CS 522 course project. [Eg. my cs511 assignments, and personal interests] [http://www.cs.uic.edu/~piotr/cs511.html Interests: Assisted Problem Solving Environments, Model Based Reasoning, Kn-Based Simulation, Int-Tutoring-Systems, ....] [Other than a timeline, our project plan should very clearly indicate our research question, hypothesis, and (possibly) theory, the nature and volume of data that we propose to collect, our method of data collection, the analyses that we will perform on your data, and a description of how we will interpret the results of those analyses with respect to your original hypothesis. It must also include a preliminary review of literature related to your project.] More at: http://tigger.uic.edu/~moher/522/

| | | | Â | Â | Â | A study of modeling..processes/env/
Relating to how the process of modeling is done, and suggestions of environments that might match (the studied task's needs). I will watch the solving of a simple simulated environment on graph-paper. I will try to see what representations people use to take gradual perceptions to diagnose possible threats and use logic/etc to avoid them, and seek the goal. The problem is described in this link: http://www.cs.ucla.edu/~apulliam/wumpus/help.html Now The project study design can be found at: http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/522-proj-breakdown.html This is also the bottom right link.

April 14, we need to be done with your data collection; Start analysis. During the week of April 21, we will write up your results; During the week of April 28 (the last week of classes), we will hold a formal two-part mini-conference; ==Starting to break out pages such as: (all the links at the bottom), the paper draft: A draft of the paper is at: http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/bobak-cpf.htm, & ====Facilitaiton info now at: http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/522-facilition.html

| Â | Â | Â | My suggested reading:T Green, M Resnick and then Simon&Newell; then L Schauble & R Leher. ===My 1st (project) idea was about the (computational) (ways/ tools/systems) used to model a (natural) system of (sci/eng) interest. Specifically, trying to understand how ones understanding/ knowledge of the system is captured, and then (hopefully easily) used/minipulated/tested/queried/looked-at, so that further understanding can be gleaned. I was going to focus on Kn-Acquistion/ (Ontology Building) tools, and try to show which tasks they really helped with (esp. compared to a more hand-built/'compiled' approach). [I hope to capture more than a one/1st use/purely numerical model. (I want the intent. So the artifact can be used as the model was intended, in any circumstance, rather than a specific 1shot context.)] -I'm also interested in how/why a tool is accepted. So finding out how people think about doing this task, might help me think of how to make a more 'acceptable' tool? =So I want to see how more causal (model-based) reasons can be gleaned from observation and questioning, and in this study compared with a computational model, if possible. ==Final project will just be watching the problem sovling activity in a simple simulated environment. I will see what representation/techniques helped people gain max-info & do the best in the end. I should be able to compare (to some degree) the players model with some computational ones I have constructed.I will do the comparison, by seeing how the player rates the next-move at each step, and get some reasons why. I will compare it with a numerical rate/ranking given by my models.I might even try to compare if some of the make-up of this numerical ranking and the persons reasoning can be compared. ==Longer/ formatted version at: http://homepage.mac.com/bobak/522-reading-background.html<BR>
